DignityUSA Statement of Support for the Transgender Community
DignityUSA affirms, with unwavering conviction, that our transgender and nonbinary siblings are beloved by God. Their lives, gifts, and sacred journeys reveal the fullness of God’s creative diversity and the transforming power of divine love.
DignityUSA proudly endorses “Beloved by God: A Declaration of a Catholic Commitment to Trans-Affirmation.” This declaration embodies our deepest values as a Catholic movement rooted in justice, equity, and inclusion. We affirm that transgender and nonbinary people are living into the dream God had for them long before birth, and we stand in solidarity with their right to safety, dignity, and self-determination in every area of life.
As a faith community committed to justice and grounded in the Gospel, we:
- Prioritize advocacy to end all forms of violence, discrimination, and exclusion directed toward transgender and nonbinary people, as our faith compels us to defend the dignity of every human person.
- Uphold and actively support access to affirming health care, housing, education, and employment that foster growth, flourishing, and well-being.
- Pledge to create and expand spaces—liturgical, social, and online—where all people can be fully seen, named, and celebrated in their God-given identities.
- Reject unequivocally all forms of so-called “conversion” or “reparative” therapy and every effort to pressure individuals toward conformity with cisnormative expectations.
- Commit to ongoing formation, education, and dialogue within Catholic communities to deepen understanding, strengthen compassion, and dismantle harmful narratives.
Catholic tradition teaches that hospitality is a sacred virtue and that in welcoming the stranger, we encounter Christ. The call to honor transgender lives is an invitation to practice that hospitality—to recognize, in each person’s authentic self, the image of God made manifest.
In the words of Jesus: “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me.” (Matthew 25:35)
We hear that invitation as a mandate to build a Church where every transgender and nonbinary person is not merely tolerated but celebrated as a revelation of God’s love.
