DignityUSA, the world’s oldest organization of LGBTQ+ Catholics and allies, applauds the Supreme Court’s declining to hear a case that questioned the constitutionality of its 2015 ruling that brought marriage equality to the country. The petition for review was brought by Kim Davis, whose job as a county clerk in Kentucky included issuing marriage licenses.

“The Supreme Court’s decision not to hear this appeal is a relief to many same-sex couples and to their families,” said Marianne Duddy-Burke, DignityUSA’s executive director. “Many of our members are feeling vulnerable. Couples planning to marry have moved up their weddings, and many have traveled to get married in states that have marriage equality written into their constitutions. They want to do everything they can to protect their relationships and their families.

“This decision provides some breathing room,” said Duddy-Burke. “However, we know there are other cases challenging marriage equality moving through the legal system, and states considering legislation that could undermine legal protections of same-sex couples and our families. We in DignityUSA will continue to uphold the equality of our relationships and do all we can to stop every effort to overturn a law that has strengthened our country.”
