CAPITOL HILL BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS PUBLIC POLICY IMPLICATIONS OF GROWTH IN CATHOLIC SUPPORT FOR LGBT EQUALITY
Recent study shows Catholics are more accepting of the Gay and Lesbian Community than other major Christian denominations
WASHINGTON, DC – Equally Blessed, a coalition of Roman Catholic organizations that support full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, will host a briefing on Catholic support for the LGBT community for congressional staff, policymakers, advocates, and the media, on March 30, 2011 at 2:00pm in the Gold Room at 2168 Rayburn House Office Building. This event is being supported by the Arcus Foundation.
Recent studies demonstrate that a majority of Catholics in America are accepting and welcoming of their LGBT brothers and sisters in their congregations and support public policies that promote LGBT equality. For example, according to a Public Religion Research Institute Study released March 2011, 74% of Catholics support legal recognition of same-sex relationships. Representative Joe Crowley (D-NY) will join Sister Simone Campbell, Reverend Bryan Massingale and David Saavedra in a discussion about Catholic leadership for LGBT social justice. The discussion will also include a presentation by leading researcher Dr. Robert P. Jones on Catholic public opinion, and it will be moderated by Sister Maureen Fiedler, host of the Interfaith Voices radio program.
