Both the Living Beatitudes Community, a ministry of Dignity Dayton, and DignityUSA have written to Archbishop Dennis Schnurr protesting the recent removal of a long-time teacher at an Archdiocesan high school after it was discovered he was married to another man. The contract of James Zimmerman, who had taught at Archbishop Alter High School for 23 years, will not be renewed for Fall of 2020, to the grave disappointment and outrage of many in the school and alumni community. DignityUSA is calling for the abolishment of the contract used by all Archdiocesan schools, which designates all teachers as “ministers,” and has been used to terminate not only LGBTQI people but allies, an unmarried pregnant teacher, a teacher who conceived with the assistance of reproductive technology, and more. You’ll soon be able to join the call to do away with these standards, which most Catholics understand have nothing to do with someone’s ability to perform their job well. |
