Litany recited at the United Nations during Pope Benedict XVI’s Pastoral Visit to the United States

Please join us in this litany. Our response will be, Loving God, hear us.

Loving God, we come today to pray for the peoples of the world, Your world, whose lives are touched by the words and actions of Pope Benedict XVI. We especially lift up to you all people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, and those who have been touched by HIV/AIDS. And so we pray…

We pray that all gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people will know respect and inclusion in their families, their faith communities, and their societies, we pray…

For all people who have been the targets of anti-gay hate crimes and violence, and for all who live in fear, we pray…

For families who believe their faith teaches they must exclude or condemn gay loved ones, we pray…

For all who live in countries where it is illegal to be who they are, we pray…

For government officials who seek to increase justice for our community, we pray…

For all who are ill with, have been orphaned by, or are threatened by HIV disease, for those unable to access treatment, for those who are their caregivers and loved ones, and for all who seek cures and more effective treatment, we pray…

For Pope Benedict, that he will experience a change of heart, and become a Good Shepherd for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and our families, we pray…

That all people will come to honor and celebrate their sexual orientation and gender identities as blessings bestowed by you, Loving Creator, and that all may live in peace and joy, we pray…
