Job Description: Board of Directors

DignityUSA is the nation’s foremost and largest organization of out and proud gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgended Catholics, our families and friends.

Vision Statement

DignityUSA envisions and works for a time when Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Catholics are affirmed and experience dignity through the integration of their spirituality with their sexuality, and as beloved persons of God participate fully in all aspects of life within the Church and Society.

The DignityUSA Board of Directors (BOD) is comprised of individuals who are elected by the members or appointed by the President and BOD, to assist and promote the mission of the organization. The BOD is responsible to monitor the financial, business and legal affairs of DignityUSA. Board members should be prepared to engage in the following tasks:

I. To oversee DignityUSA by deciding, developing and guiding the implementation of policies. This includes:

  1. Attend and participate in board meetings.
  2. Hire and oversee the executive staff
  3. Review pertinent information between meetings and participate in necessary communication among board members
  4. Develop and approve annual budget, and provide fiscal oversight

II. To act as an advocate for DignityUSA with regard to the financial need of the organization. This means the Board Member will engage in:

  1. Giving and actively raising money
  2. Active stewardship of time and talent
  3. Considering the organization when planning one’s estate

III. To be an ambassador for DignityUSA by promoting its mission at every opportunity. The board member must be prepared to:

  1. Interpret and translate the mission of D/USA
  2. Represent D/USA to internal and external constituencies
  3. Provide timely and accurate information about controversial issues and defend D/USA when the organization or its mission is under pressure

IV. To provide consultation to the board by bringing one’s own skills and expertise to the position of board member. The following are examples of talents and skills needed on the DignityUSA board:

  1. Development and Fundraising
  2. Personnel and Human Resources
  3. Law
  4. Communications and Public Relations
  5. Organizational Development

The DignityUSA board is a working board of directors. As such, board members should plan on contributing a minimum of 8 hours per month to board activities.

When put together, the above talents, skills and experience can be expected to produce a board of directors, which is life-giving to the organization. As such, it is expected that the board will be stable in its actions, prophetic with regard to its voice and programs, and life affirming.
