DignityUSA Statement - September 14, 2001

DignityUSA joins with all people of goodwill in expressing our shock and horror at the terrorist strikes against the US earlier this week. We extend our deepest sympathy to all of those who have lost people they love, or who are still waiting for word of the missing. In particular, we extend condolences to the loved ones of Fr. Mychal Judge, NY Fire Department Chaplain, who was a longtime member of Dignity, and to all our members and friends who have been directly impacted by these events. May those responsible be brought to justice under the law in the not too distant future.

We urge all of our Chapters meeting this weekend to use their liturgies to pray for the nation, the world and the victims of this atrocity, and for an end to violence of all kinds.

We are outraged by the comments of Rev. Jerry Falwell and Rev. Pat Robertson, who blame gay men and lesbians for helping to cause this terrorism. Expressions of fanaticism and hate only serve to escalate violence and are totally inappropriate, especially at this time. We also reject any notion that God allowed this to happen as a sign of disfavor with our nation.

DignityUSA urges all of our members to take whatever actions they can to assist in the recovery efforts. We support prayer services and vigils being held across the country, and encourage our members who are able to donate blood, money or time to volunteer efforts to do so.

We wish all the peace and comfort that only God can give.

Mary Louise Cervone
President

Marianne Duddy
Executive Director
