Volume 14, No. 7 |
DignityUSA works for respect and justice for all gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons in the Catholic Church and the world through education, advocacy and support.
DignityUSA is pleased to announce the results of the recent national election. Sam Sinnett and Peggy Burns are re-elected for a second term as president and vice-president.
The new directors for the national board are: Gabino Cabanilla (Los Angeles, CA), Theresa Myers (Columbus, OH) and Rita Wagner (Indianapolis, IN). They will begin their two year term on October 1, 2005.
DignityUSA thanks all the nominees for volunteering and welcomes the new directors to national leadership.
DignityUSA would also like to thank the Nominations Committee (Richard Young, Deb Core and Greg Haboush) and the Election Committee (Chuck Busnuk and David Vespa) for their time and work for our organization
DignityUSA welcomes Debra Weill, an experienced executive in non-profit and social justice work, as the organization’s executive director.
Weill previously served as executive director of GLBT community centers in Concord, California (San Francisco Bay area), and Madison, Wisconsin, and as senior field and policy coordinator for PFLAG – Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
“We’re thrilled that Debbie will be DignityUSA’s new executive director,” said Sam Sinnett, president of DignityUSA. “She brings a wealth of talent and experience to this position at a very challenging time for GLBT Catholics. Debbie has been working in the GLBT movement for over ten years and non-profits for more than twenty years. She brings the perspective of strategic leadership at the highest levels, regional community work, and the operational skills to keep us moving forward.”
Weill brings fundraising and advocacy experience from her three previous positions at Rainbow Community Center (Concord), OutReach (Madison) and PFLAG.
Her successes include advocating for and achieving domestic partnership benefits and gender identity rights for residents in the city of Madison and employees of the surrounding county, leading a Madison coalition objecting to discriminatory practices which resulted in no further United Way funds going to the Boy Scouts, and generating new sources of funding for programs.
Weill’s non-profit experience includes holding almost every position from volunteer to board chair and executive director.
Weill attended a diocesan seminary in Milwaukee for six years (high school and two years of college) before completing B.A. and M.A. degrees at the University of Wisconsin.
A lifelong Catholic, Weill is a transsexual woman. With her selection, DignityUSA becomes one of the first national GLBT organizations with a transgender executive director.
Weill will direct the staff and work of DignityUSA at the national headquarters in Washington, D.C., and will be meeting members and supporters of DignityUSA across the country in the coming months.
Members of DignityUSA are invited to share your ideas with Debbie by writing to ExecutiveDirector@DignityUSA.org.
The leadership team of DignityUSA will soon begin a long-term planning process. In preparation for that planning, we are working to assess the current state of the organization and, more importantly, the future opportunities and challenges the organization is likely to face.
Your participation in our great mission as a member and reader of this DATELINE indicates your investment in our present and future. We value your thoughts. Your answers to the survey questions will be of great value to our planning process.
A sincere thank you from your Board of Directors.

DignityUSA’s current short range strategic priorities as adopted by the Board of Directors are:

GOAL 1: Amplify the voice of DignityUSA to have a minimum of 500 additional members by September 30, 2005.
Problem/Concern/Current Data: Current income needs to increase to support DignityUSA’s mission.
GOAL 2: Empower the voice of DignityUSA by increasing non-Convention income by $15,000 over that of fiscal year 2003-2004 by September 30, 2005.
Problem/Concern/Current Data: Current volunteer and paid staffing is not sufficient to support DignityUSA’s mission.
GOAL 3: Recruit sufficient volunteers and paid staff with the talents required to do the work of the DignityUSA Board, committees, programs, projects, and office.
Problem/Concern/Current Data: Programs are essential to accomplishing the DignityUSA mission. Programming needs to match available talent and resources.
