Congratulations to Mary
Louise Cervone
Mary
Louise Cervone, immediate past President of DignityUSA, was recently awarded
the International Eleanor Award for Community Leadership.
The award, named in honor of former United States First Lady Eleanor
Roosevelt, is given to a prominent activist for human equal rights.
Mary Louise was recognized for her steady, positive public presence and
appositely addressing the misconception of "pedophilia equating to homosexuality"
during the Catholic Church's recent and current sex scandals.
Ms. Cervone was consistent in her retort and supportive of the entire
GLBTI community in addressing ignorance, while simultaneously creating
a necessary bond of support and solidarity between the male and female
communities within the fragmented GLBTI community.
Mary Louise had this to say. "The recognition and thanks do not belong
to me. They belong to DignityUSA, and to all the single voices that speak
of the truth of our lives, with pride, integrity, and compassion every
day. It has always been the thunder of all the single voices that creates
the one formidable voice that we are today."
Gill Foundation Awards Grant to DignityUSA
By Marianne Duddy, Executive Director
DignityUSA is pleased to announce that it has been named the recipient
of a Gill Foundation National Board Training Grant. This grant will provide
a full day of training on Board roles and responsibilities, strategic
planning and fundraising.
President Patrick McArron said, "The entire Board is very excited about
the opportunity that the Gill Foundation is offering us. The bylaws adopted
last summer have demanded new focus from our Board members. The training
will provide enhanced tool for the challenges we've taken on in working
to strengthen DignityUSA."
The training will be offered during the Board's October 4-6, 2002, meeting
in Washington, DC.
DignityUSA to Hold 3rd Conference
San Diego is the location. October 12th is the date.
"We Shall Not Be Silent" Conference #3 welcomes Marianne Duddy as Keynote
Speaker. Plan now to attend. Details and registration are being made available
on the DignityUSA website, News
Service and via a special mailing to the western states. This event
is being co-sponsored by DignityUSA, Dignity/San Diego and Call to Action-San
Diego.
World Youth Week Report
Charlie Mudge, of Dignity-Integrity/Rochester, reports that the World
Youth Week experience for him was wonderful. He met lots of individuals
and was able to speak out about the needs of LGBT Catholics.
Charlie said, "The Solidarity Sunday Cards and ribbons were a big hit.
Many of the youth from WYD (World Youth Day) who came through took ribbons
and cards." He talked up Solidarity Sunday a lot and pushed the ecumenical
focus!
Some folks expressed an interest in doing something for Solidarity Sunday
in Toronto.
Charlie further commented that "the Mass on Tuesday, with Rev. Mary Rammerman
presiding, was wonderful. I could feel the power of the Spirit in the
church. She's a blessing."
Thank you Charlie for being there for us.

Welcome to New Editor
By Pat McArron, President, DignityUSA
Bill Welch, long time member of DignityUSA, graciously volunteered to
take on the responsibility of editing Dateline, the monthly DignityUSA
publication.
Bill is currently the publisher and senior editor of SAN JOSE UPDATE,
the monthly newsletter of the San Jose, California, chapter. He has been
actively involved in the San Francisco Bay Area chapter for over 26 years.
Welcome aboard, Bill, and thank you for your service to DignityUSA.
From the Editor
By Bill Welch
Peace and Greetings!
Welcome to the redesigned Dateline, your monthly DignityUSA news
bulletin. It is my intent to follow the course set by my editor predecessors,
keeping this an informative and attractive publication.
A large percentage of our readers have subscribed to the electronic version,
which is both a time and cost effective distribution method.
The publication is generated using a desktop publisher, then output as
a compressed portable document format (PDF) file, which can be read across
a variety of computer platforms and operating systems with Acrobat Reader,
a free utility by Adobe Corporation at http://www.adobe.com.
With our readers in mind, graphics content will be kept at a minimum to
keep the file size manageable. I intend to keep this a text-based, rather
than graphics-enhanced, publication.
A slightly modified file, compatible with photocopying, will be provided
Ben Boerkoel, National Secretary, for hardcopy distribution.
A file, in different format, will be provided by Chuck Provancher, our
website manager, for his graphics enhancement and creative rendering to
match the style of the DignityUSA website.
I encourage local chapters to redistribute the PDF file to members and
friends on their electronic mailing or distribution lists.
Thanks to our readers and all who contribute content or aid in the distribution
process.
