DignityUSA Endorses New Ways Ministry Symposium

Discounted Registration offered to members of DignityUSA - Enroll Early!

"Out of Silence, God Has Called Us" is the theme of New Ways Ministry's national symposium on lesbian/gay issues and the Vatican II Church. To be held March 8-10, 2002 in Louisville, Kentucky, the symposium features plenary speakers Eugene Kennedy, Rosemary Haughton, Bishops Thomas Gumbleton and Leroy Matthiesen, and Edwina Gateley. The symposium includes a daylong conference for parents of gay and lesbian children and pastoral ministers, led by Bishop Gumbleton and Linda McCullough, associate director of New Ways Ministry.

Focus sessions by writers, biblical scholars, theologians, pastoral ministers and religious men and women cover a wide range of topics. New Ways will be incorporating participants' input to issue a statement outlining Lesbian/Gay Ministry in the Catholic Church: A Vision for the Future.

DignityUSA will be coordinating registrations for our members, in order to provide you with a discounted rate. To register at the special $150 rate, send your registration to DignityUSA, 1500 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Suite 11, Washington, DC 2005. Registrations must be received by February 12, 2002. Be sure to stop by the DignityUSA table at the symposium!

New Ways MinistryFurther information and registration packets are available by visiting the New Ways Ministry website at www.NewWaysMinistry.org. You can e-mail NewWaysM@aol.com, or call 301/277-5674.

This event has been endorsed by DignityUSA and many other religious communities, Catholic communities, and social justice organizations that recognize the need for a public forum addressing critical issues facing lesbian and gay persons and the Catholic Church.

MarylandMaryland Update

Things have changed drastically in Maryland. (See "Gill Foundation Grant Work", Sept. 2001 Dateline). The group trying to get the Equal Rights law repealed failed to get enough signatures to get their initiative on the ballot! The law is now in effect, and is safe from any repeal. So, our work in Maryland is done.

What a victory!

We accomplished a number of things:

  • Made a credible argument that this type of work is needed, and that we're the right ones to do it
  • Identified a sizable network of our members in one area who are committed to advocacy
  • Worked with our own membership and supporter database in a new way
  • Found ways to identify other organizations and Catholics that can support part of our movement
  • Enlisted chapter support and partnership in a new way (holding intro meeting, offering to host training sessions, and publicizing USA efforts).

We will be closing out this accomplishment with a report to the Gill Foundation, and the proposal that we continue to target other areas where Catholic opinion and influence is critical to the outcome of a GBLT civil rights initiative.

Happy Silver Anniversary to:

Chapter Corner

You have probably heard of the Adopt a Highway program conducted in many states to help keep our highways clean. Well...

The Integrity-Dignity (ID) Chapter in Madison, Wisconsin recently made the decision to adopt a stretch of highway in their state. What makes the decision all the more interesting is that the highway selected is known as Highway ID, about 15 miles from Madison. The story does not end there. The stretch of highway is right next to a stretch adopted by the Knights of Columbus. The plan now is to find out when they clean up their section of highway and then ID Madison will invite them to get acquainted with Integrity-Dignity Madison. Now that is creative!

DignityUSA Committees

National Board fills two

In a recent vote of the board of directors, members of two committees have been appointed. Those committees are the Nominating Committee and the Elections Committee. It will be the responsibility of these committees to oversee and assist with the election process as outlined in the re-imagined Dignity. These appointments expire on September 30, 2002.

Dignity Vision Statement

DignityUSA envisions and works for a time when Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Catholics are affirmed and experience dignity through the integration of their spirituality with their sexuality and, as beloved persons of God, participate fully in all aspects of life within the Church and Society.

Have a great New Year!
