Keeping you informed TABLE OF CONTENTS DignityUSA Convention 2003 Deadline National AIDS Network Significant Appointment |
Dignity/Denver celebrated its 27th anniversary with a gala weekend August 25-26. The chapter invited DignityUSA Executive Director Marianne Duddy to address the group as guest homilist and as the speaker for the chapters community dinner. In addition, she used the trip to spend some time at the Gill Foundation office, updating our grants manager on the progress already made on the Maryland work partially funded by their grant (see September Dateline for details).
The Denver chapter hosted a fund-raiser in the penthouse of the Denver UN Building to kick off meeting the Gill Foundations challenge on Sunday night, raising over $4,000 in a single night. The event was attended by Gill Foundation Senior Program Officer Rick Jung, who gave a wonderful speech, very supportive of Dignity's activities. Rick and his partner also attended the Chapters anniversary liturgy on Sunday.
Congratulations to Dignity/Denver on a terrific community-building event! mtd
Heartfelt CondolencesTo all the members and friends of Dignity who have been touched by the tragedies of September 11 in Washington, DC and New York we extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers. DignityUSA officers & Board of Directors. (Editor's note: Fr. Mychal Judge, one of the New York fire departments Roman Catholic chaplains, had rushed to the scene to comfort victims, only to be killed in the collapse of the buildings. Mychal was also a good friend of Dignity/New York) |
On Saturday August 11, Pat McArron, DignityUSA Vice President, met with Dignity/San Antonio Chapter leadership to discuss plans for a future national conference weekend, to be hosted by San Antonio in 2002. Pat spoke at the chapters anniversary Mass on Sunday August 12 at St Henrys Catholic Church.
We extend our sincere thanks to Dignity/Philadelphia for co-hosting our reception and providing volunteers to staff the Dignity information table at the recent Call to Action (CTA) Conference in Philadelphia. The final CTA national conference will be held in Chicago, November 2-4. mlc
November 30th, 2001 is the deadline to take advantage of the pre-registration discount for the next big DignityUSA national convention, to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2003. Download a registration form in Microsoft Word.
Our host hotel, the Alexis Park, has a terrific website: www.alexispark.com. We recommend a visit to their site for all sorts of information about that resort. All rooms at the hotel are suites, and we have secured a convention rate starting at $99.00 per night!! This is a convention you will not want to miss.

AIDS Network Significant Appointment Dignity is proud to announce that Fr. Tom has been named co-chair of the National Council of Religious AIDS Network. This is an honor for Tom and for DignityUSA. We look forward to Tom's continued presence and increasing role in fighting AIDS.
The quarterly meeting of the national board of directors will take place the weekend of October 26-28, 2001 at the Washington Plaza Hotel at Thomas Circle in Washington, D.C. This will be the first meeting of the new board since the 2001 national convention in Chicago. At this meeting the board will chart a new course for Dignity as a result of the changed bylaws passed by the final House of Delegates meeting in Chicago in July.
The following motions from the July 2001 national board of directors meeting were inadvertently left out of a recent mailing to the chapters:
Fr. Robert Nugent, SDS, one of the recipients of the 2001 Dignity Lifetime Achievement Award, will be leading a tour of the Emerald Isle May 20-29, 2002. For details contact Fr. Bob at cnew292@aol.com
By the time you read this, our chapter in Seattle will have made a very important decision the very future of Dignity in Seattle. Dignity in Seattle has been challenged to live up to the Dignity Statement of Position & Purpose. Basically the chapter has been told by the diocese that to continue to worship as a group at St. Josephs Catholic Church Dignity can be there, but be invisible. The chapter has the full support of DignityUSA in standing UP for what Dignity stands FOR.
Some of you may have recently received an e-mail announcing the launch of my new Internet column, "The Word from Rome," on the NCR website (www.nationalcatholicreporter.org/word/):
It provides a weekly perspective on the Vatican and the world church that goes beyond what appears in the newspaper. I forgot to mention that you can sign up to receive a weekly e-mail letting you know the new column is posted and providing a link to take you directly to it. To register, simply click the link at the top of the page that says "Sign Up for Weekly E-mail" and fill out a very brief form.
I realize e-mail clutter is a real problem these days. Nevertheless, I would encourage you to sign up for this service. It is the primary way the folks at NCR have to establish whether this new venture is successful, so the more we can demonstrate there's an audience for the column, the better everyone will feel. I also ask you to forward this e-mail to anyone you think might be interested.

Vatican Correspondent
October is a very big month for Dignity chapter anniversaries. No less than 15 chapters will be celebrating a total of 350 years of service in communities around the country. Dignity has much to celebrate in the lives we have saved, the hearts we have touched, and the minds we have informed.
