DignityUSA DATELINE
Volume 10, No. 11
November 2001
A Call to Prayer, a Time of Remembrance
[The following statement was issued by DignityUSA on
Sept 14, after press time for the October Dateline.]
DignityUSA
joins with all people of goodwill in expressing our shock and horror at
the terrorist strikes against the US earlier this week. We extend our
deepest sympathy to all of those who have lost people they love, or who
are still waiting for word of the missing. In particular, we extend condolences
to the loved ones of Fr. Mychal Judge, NY Fire Department Chaplain, who
was a longtime member of Dignity, and to all our members and friends who
have been directly impacted by these events. May those responsible be
brought to justice under the law in the not too distant future.
We urge all of our Chapters meeting this weekend to use their liturgies
to pray for the nation, the world and the victims of this atrocity, and
for an end to violence of all kinds.
We are outraged by the comments of Rev. Jerry Falwell and Rev. Pat Robertson,
who blame gay men and lesbians for helping to cause this terrorism. Expressions
of fanaticism and hate only serve to escalate violence and are totally
inappropriate, especially at this time. We also reject any notion that
God allowed this to happen as a sign of disfavor with our nation.
DignityUSA urges all of our members to take whatever actions
they can to assist in the recovery efforts. We support prayer services
and vigils being held across the country, and encourage our members who
are able to donate blood, money or time to volunteer efforts to do so.
We wish all the peace and comfort that only God can give.

for our 2003 biennial Convention in Las VegasA Voice in the Desert.
Those participating in pre-registration will be guaranteed to save 10%
off the full registration fee.
The Convention will be July 31 through August 3, 2003, and

across the street from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Resort. The Alexis

Harmon Avenue. This section of Las Vegas is an excellent location for
those interested in premier dining, seeing shows or playing games of chance
at the Belagio, Paris, Bally's, New York New York, MGM Grand, Monte Carlo
and the many other major resorts along the famous Las Vegas Strip.

More information
Many
thanks and abundant blessings on all members and chapters who participated
in Solidarity Sunday this year. Please let us know at solidaritysunday@dignityusa.org
what you did and how many were involved. Its important to document
the participation and your creativity in this important anti-violence
message. D/USA had 50,000 ribbon/cards made up; how about you?
A Grateful Thank You!
The officers and directors of the DignityUSA board wish
to extend a very sincere thank you to Mike Hogan, John Nangle, Janet O'Day,
& Nickie Valdez for years of dedicated service to Dignity in so many
ways. Your absence from the board will be noticed. And we know that you
will continue to serve Dignity in your own special ways.
Month of Remembrance
During this month of the remembrance of All Saints and All
Souls, we hold in prayer all of our members, friends and supporters who
have died. May they experience the joy of resurrection. And, as we celebrate
Thanksgiving, all of us at DignityUSA express our gratitude to all of
you who support us throughout the year with your prayers, kind words,
financial contributions, and gifts of time and talent.
Promise Fulfilled
Seasonal Reflections For the GLBT Community
Dignity/San Francisco has compiled a series of reflections
for the GLBT community based on the major seasons of the Church year.
Entitled "Promise Fulfilled," the series begins with Advent and is for
use in small faith-sharing communities. For more information, check out
the Dignity/San Francisco Web site (www.dignitypacific.org/SanFrancisco)
or call 415-584-1034.
WORLD AIDS DAY 2001
Over
34 million people have HIV/AIDS worldwide. Fr. Tom, our national
AIDS project director, says all of our chapters can make an important
difference in raising awareness by talking about AIDS and HIV prevention
in and outside regular chapter events. The very least of which is to wear
your red ribbon to show support on December 1. Since 1988, Dec. 1 has
been a day for bringing messages of compassion, hope, solidarity and understanding
about AIDS to every country in the world, and is the only international
day of coordinated action against AIDS. Fr. Tom feels "Dignity can be
a pro-active voice in stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS in the new millennium
and it is simple things like world AIDS day programming at the chapter
level that makes such a difference." Visit the World Aids Day Website:
http://worldaidsday.org.

Please keep Linda Rieder, recently elected to serve on the
national board of directors, in your prayers. She is currently undergoing
treatment for cancer.
Dignity Vision Statement
DignityUSA envisions and works for a time when Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual
and Transgender Catholics are affirmed and experience dignity through
the integration of their spirituality with their sexuality and, as beloved
persons of God, participate fully in all aspects of life within the Church
and Society.
