Keeping you informed TABLE OF CONTENTS What do we look like in the re-imagined Dignity? Dignity/San Francisco Models Stewardship in a Powerful Way |
The weekend meeting began on the evening of Friday, October 26, at the Washington Plaza Hotel. The board welcomed our newest members, Linda Rieder & Peggy Hayes, who had much to contribute to the discussion.
The Board recognized that in the re-imagined Dignity, how we have worked in the past is not necessarily how we can best work in the future. Therefore, we opened the meeting by discussing how we need to relate to one another in order to serve our members and constituents most effectively. President Mary Louise Cervone led the discussion about what new responsibilities the Board has, and how we can fulfill them.
Bob Miailovich presented a review of DignityUSA's current initiatives regarding relationships with the larger Church. His report captured everything from dialogues with the Church's bishops, at both the national and local levels to networking activities with other justice-oriented groups. The Board identified priorities to guide our work with other Church and kindred organizations.
On Saturday Bob continued the discussion on our relationship to the church and other kindred organizations.
The remainder of the morning was spent on the topic of Dignitys relationship to our members and constituencies we serve. Several strategies were discussed regarding the retention of members and the development of new members.
After lunch Executive Director Marianne Duddy led discussions on Solidarity Sunday and the Maryland Initiative. Then time was spent on the four regional conferences to be held next year.
Following that discussion, the board moved on to the topic of communication. A significant list of the forms of communication in Dignity was developed for the sake of identifying our weaknesses and strengths. These forms of communication include direct mail, e-mail, the Dignity news service, list serves, chat lists, leadership and donor communications, caucuses, in-person communications, the Dateline, the Journal, phone calls and teleconferences, membership meetings, news media communications including press releases, presentations, information tables, speeches, advertising, the web site, brochures and video.
That discussion led to the identification of twelve board committees. The twelve committees are:
On Sunday morning, Marianne spoke about directors as fiscal stewards of DignityUSA. Following that topic, the board began a discussion of upcoming fundraisers and the budget for the organization. It should be noted that the Board pledged to contribute and raise $40,000 in this Fiscal Year for D/USA.
Other matters of business brought before the board: a Convention 2003 update, a motion to re-appoint Fr. Tom as chair of DignityUSAs AIDS Ministry, assignments to the board committees, relationship of Catholic Organizations for Renewal (COR) with the bishops conference, and Solidarity Sunday in 2002.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:34 pm, Sunday, Oct 28.

Many thanks are due the people who represented DignityUSA at Chicago Call To Action. Dignity/Chicago provided a number of volunteers to staff the booth, which were supported by members from Integrity/Dignity Madison. Chris Connors' workshop on Lesbian Catholic spirituality in song and story was very well received. Sam Sinnett coordinated all the booth activities. Bob Miailovich and Sam represented the Board.
That is the chosen theme for the DignityUSA Conferences in 2002. San Antonio, TX and Buffalo, NY have been selected as two of the four sites for the regional conferences in 2002.
DignityUSA envisions and works for a time when Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Catholics are affirmed and experience dignity through the integration of their spirituality with their sexuality and, as beloved persons of God, participate fully in all aspects of life within the Church and Society.
