Millennial Pilgrimage to Italy to Benefit DignityUSA

Save the dates! From November 7 - 16, 2000, DignityUSA will be sponsoring its first ever trip to Italy for members, family and friends. This 9-day tour includes stops in Florence, Assisi and Rome, with plenty of time to enjoy the highlights of each city. It even includes a Papal audience! A portion of the $2,895 fee (which includes round-trip airfare, accommodations in superior tourist class hotels and many meals) is a tax-deductible contribution to DignityUSA, so your foreign vacation will help further Dignity's ministry here at home. Space is limited, so please sign up early.

Dignity President Attends Gore Fundraiser

DignityUSA president Mary Louise Cervone recently attended a fundraising dinner for Vice-President Al Gore. Sponsored by members and friends of Dignity, Mary Louise was among forty invited guests to have dinner with Mr. Gore. The dinner was preceeded by a briefing from the Democratic National Committee National Chair Joe Andrews and Treasurer Andrew Tobias. Mr. Gore made some brief remarks, and responded to questions in an informal Q&A with attendees. Mr. Gore expressed his strong support of ENDA and The Hate Crimes Prevention Act. It was clear that gay and lesbian people were an integral part of this administration and within the Gore campaign.

After Mr. Gore left, a lengthy discussion with White House staff, DNC officials, and U.S. Representatives Barney Frank (MA) and Tammy Baldwin (WI) continued. Church intervention in civil issues and hate crimes were two topics of importance. Attendees included individual contributors as well as officials from national GLBT organizations including HRC; NGLTF; PFLAG; GLSEN and others.

At the dinner, Mary Louise met Ms. Julian Potter, the White House liaison to the gay and lesbian community. As a result of that introduction, on April 28th, Mary Louise and Marianne Duddy, DignityUSA Executive Director, met with Ms. Potter at the White House. During their hour-long meeting, the three discussed the importance of DignityUSA as the only organized voice for GLBT Catholics, our families and friends, and our mission to transform lives and be a catalyst for change in our church and society. We hope to build a strong working relationship with Ms. Potter and staff, and articulate the message of truth and justice in all areas affecting GLBT Catholics.

Share the feeling!

As you celebrate GLBT Pride month in June, please think about remembering Dignity with a financial gift. If possible, consider becoming a President's Club member! For a gift of $100, you'll receive a personal subscription to the Dignity Dateline! Gifts of any amount are gratefully received. Happy Pride!

House Parties, Special Events Help Raise Needed $ for Dignity

Three recent events have raised over $8,000 for DignityUSA. Thanks to Jeff Stone and Jim Morris of New York City and M.A. Ladd and Peggy Burns of Boston for hosting fundraising "house parties" in March and April. Jeff and Jim's took the form of a cocktail party, whereas at Peggy and M.A.'s a number of Dignity artists entertained the attendees.

On the occasion of I/D Madison's Jim Green and Bill Diederich's 30th Anniversary, Jim and Bill asked that, in lieu of presents, contributions be sent to DignityUSA. Thanks to them, and to all who honored their "pearl anniversary" with a gift to Dignity.

In May, President Mary Louise Cervone and Board Member Tom Streeper will be co-hosting a house party, where local GLBT leaders will be on hand to meet and chat with Dignity members and supporters. In June, Nickie Valdez and Deb Myers will commemorate Nickie's 25 years of leadership in Dignity and the San Antonio GLBT community with a party to benefit Dignity.

We are grateful to all who help raise money for Dignity through these events. If you have a special birthday, anniversary or other occasion coming up, and would like to use it to help support Dignity's ministry — or if you'd just like to host a house party in your community — please contact Marianne Duddy at 800-877-8797.

People of Dignity, Speak Up…& Take Personal Responsibility!

Congratulations!

DignityUSA extends congratulations to Paul Scarbrough, a member from New Haven, CT, who was recently named to the Board of Directors of Call To Action USA. Paul, it will be great to have your voice on CTA's Board!

Hold the Dates!

This year's Call To Action national conference will be Nov. 3-5 in Milwaukee. On Friday, November 3, DignityUSA will be hosting a pre-conference day of reflection. Entitled "I Have Called You by Name: The Spirituality of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and transgender People," the retreat will offer Straight and GLBT people a chance to reflect on themes like coming out, healing, claiming one's identity and prophetic witness. Look for more information in the CTA Conference brochure, due to be mailed out in June.

Celebrate Mary of Magdala

As last year, FutureChurch has prepared a prayer service to be used in celebration of St. Mary of Magdala (Saturday, July 22) this year. The service features prayers which could be used for the Sunday vigil Mass, as well as a sunrise or vesper service. The prayer service and brochure are also available in Spanish and French.

Here's what you can do to organize a celebration of St. Mary of Magdala in your Chapter: Request a free St. Mary of Magdala prayer service, brochure and organizing kit (call 216-228-0869). Encourage the religion writer in your secular and diocesan papers to do a story. Or write your own op-ed piece (there's a sample in the organizing kit). For additional information on Mary of Magdala visit: http://www.futurechurch.org/MaryofMagdala.shtml

This is the last month for our membership discount special. DignityUSA has been offering a $5.00 discount to all new members for the months of April, May and June. Spread the word and ask your friends and family to join our family.
