DignityUSA DATELINE

October 1997

Executive Director Charles Cox Hired

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that on August 17, it approved the hiring of Charles L. Cox as the new Executive Director of DignityUSA.

"I am very excited that Charles will be joining DignityUSA in the position of Executive Director," said incoming National President Bob Miailovich. Charles was selected after a six month process including a national advertising effort, screening, rounds of interviews in late July. "The hiring of a full time executive director is a major step in the growth and maturity of our Dignity community. It offers us new opportunities to improve our public awareness, fund raising, and program quality. My personal meetings with him have shown Charles to be a kindred soul, very in tune' with the Dignity movement."

Charles brings extensive experience in nonprofit management to Dignity including work with the Victory Fund and Witness to Peace. This work, in combination with his background in theology, will be a strong foundation as Dignity grows in coming years.

Charles and his partner, Greg Denney, reside in Alexandria, Virginia. They are members of the Washington, DC and NOVA (Northern Virginia) chapters. Welcome Charles!

New National Officers

The face of Dignity's national officers will change as October begins. At the helm, Bob Miailovich steps into the office of National President. He follows the leadership of the dedicated and spirited Marianne Duddy who served as President during the past four years. Marianne will provide continuity on the Board in the role of Past-President.

Serving with Bob in the role of Vice President will be Mary Louise Cervone. She takes over the many hats worn by Terry Mischel in the course of his four years of service and leadership. Mary Louise held the office of National Treasurer over the past two years.

The Treasurer’s office will be filled by Joe Sinico of the Mountain Plains region while the Secretary’s position will be taken on by Jerry Deas of the Pacific Region. Ben Boerkoel, Secretary for the past four years, has been working closely with Jerry to assure a smooth transition.

Solidarity Sunday Reports

How did your chapter mark the third annual Solidarity Sunday on October 5, 1997?

How many ribbons and prayer cards did your chapter distribute?

How many members participated?

Who were the key organizers?

Which organizations joined in on this prophetic stance?

Who contacted your chapter for more information?

Which public figures sent letters or lent their efforts or name to the day?

Was your impact and outreach greater than last year's?

At the grass-roots level, have we as Dignity stood up to proclaim the message that violence against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons must stop?

Solidarity Sunday’s National Coordinator, Bruce Jarstfer, is eager to compile statistics and collate reports on these and many other questions. Please be sure that your chapter is included in the final report on Solidarity Sunday. According Bruce, this year's goal was to distribute close to 200,000 ribbons and prayer cards this year. Contact Bruce directly at 2634 Pebble Breeze, San Antonio, Texas 78232. Call 210.545-9097 or fax 210.545-6906. His email address is BruceSJ@aol.com.
