DignityUSA DATELINE

October, 1996

Answering Bernadin's Call

Dear Cardinal Bernadin,

On behalf of DignityUSA, thank you for your recent call for dialogue among members of our Church. We are heartened by this initiative, taken by your and some of your colleagues, and pray that it meets with much success.

I also want to reiterate DignityUSA's long-standing commitment to dialogue anytime, anywhere with any member of our church. While the majority of this dialogue is with lay individuals, other groups of committed Catholics, individual priests and religious women, there are a number of bishops with whom we have formal or informal relations, and we are very much interested in expanding that circle. We have recently begun holding periodic meetings with Cardinal O'Connor (of New York), and have found our discussions with him productive.

Even when we cannot come to agreement on sexual ethics questions, Dignity believes there are a number of issues, including ending violence towards gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons, ministry to persons with HIV/AIDS, concerns of parents of gay people, and the right of all Catholics to the sacraments that all of us share responsibility for. How can these things not prosper from mutual effort, or, at least, bringing all concerned parties to the table?

I will contact your office soon to talk about how we might begin to participate in your initiative.

Finally, know that the prayers of our members are with you in your illness. We pray that you may not suffer, and that you may have the strength to continue your most necessary work of healing and reconciliation.

Your sister,

Marianne Duddy, President

Second Annual Solidarity Sunday, October 6, 1996

Pledge: I wear this ribbon in Solidarity with my Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgendered brothers & sisters. "Violence against any person is violence against all people."

THIS IS THE BIG #50!

No, the dateline isn't quite part of the Baby Boomer wave, but this issue marks the 50th edition of this almost monthly publication of DignityUSA!

The dateline, which began under the direction of Past President Kevin Calegari, made its debut in October 1992. Many kudos to all of the National officers and Board members who over the years have supported this ongoing effort with news, faxes, e-mail-- and patience!

Thank you too for your kind words of support and timely news notes. I look forward to keeping the news flowing out to the members and friends of DignityUSA.
