Invocation by Dick Young at 2005 DignityUSA Convention, Philadelphia — July 7, 2005
We
march Through Truth to Freedom, Oh God of Justice, as our biblical ancestors
did through the desert, as the revolutionaries did in 1776 in this very
city declaring their independence from oppression.
As Barbara Gittings and Ginny Apuzzo and Gregory Baum and Brian McNaught and other powerful activists and scholars and lovers of equality did at our 1981 convention — again, in this very city. Your Spirit brought them here — Through Truth to Freedom.
Oh, how you cherish us LGBT folks and our supporters, Divine Lover! In every age you give us eminently holy and heroic people whose hearts burn within them as they dream of seeing your Gospel of inclusion lived fully. And now You've done it again in this very city: Bishop Robinson, Chrissy Gephardt, Jason and deMarco, Jeannine Gramick, John McNeill, Marianne and Becky Duddy-Burke — all veterans on the journey Through Truth to Freedom.
We call upon your invincible Spirit that propels us to walk with them. Let that Spirit fill every part of this convention, every workshop, every caucus, every liturgy, every heartfelt conversation, and make DignityUSA an even greater voice for justice and fill it with even more saints and prophets. Come Holy Spirit!
